Can Rats Kill Mice?
These two rodents are amongst the most common pests in the world. Surely, being cousins, they would coexist peacefully, both fearful of their common enemy, the cat. Not so. Smaller and slower than their rodent kin, mice are routinely hunted by rats. 

There is a name for the killing of mice: muricide. Studies conducted in the 1950s and 1960s found that between 67-77% of wild rats hunt and kill mice. Given rats' ability to adapt to survive, mice present too good an opportunity to miss out on. That doesn't mean mice are a rat's preferred prey. But if food is scarce, beggars can't be choosers, and rats will go in search of mice.

Disgustingly, when rats do kill mice, they'll eat their brain and liver first. Why? Well, these are rich in nutrients essential for rat survival. 

Why do rats kill mice?
The reasoning behind muricide is not as simple as food availability. This complex behavior involves an interplay between neurotransmitters, the neural system, and hormones. The precedence of these different influences is what creates and perpetuates the behavior.

Nevertheless, if hungry enough, all rats will resort to muricide. Hunger increases aggression and desperation, making meager opportunities look increasingly attractive. But some rats are introduced to the behavior from an early age. Just as we adopt our parents' habits, the same is true for rats. Suppose a rat witnesses its mother hunting and eating mice. In that case, they are more likely to adopt muricide into their feeding behaviors. 

Which rats are most likely to kill mice?
There are three main species of rat found in the US. The Norway rat is a born hunter, known for tracking and killing prey. The black rat or roof rat is more of a scavenger. Meanwhile, the third and least abundant species is the Woodrat – little is known about its mice-killing behavior. 

Given the differences between these species, we are unlikely to find black rats actively hunting for other animals. Even if they found a dead mouse, they might be unlikely to eat it. Contrast such behavior with the Norway rat, which will commonly hunt for mice and eat one if found dead. 

How do they kill mice?
Not the most pleasant question to consider. We've already discussed how they're eaten– focusing on the most nutrient-dense organs before consuming the rest. But how is the deed done? 

To deliver the killing blow, rats will deliver their bite to the neck and head region. The upper back is also a suitable choice. The aim is to kill swiftly and quickly. Otherwise, the mice may either bolt or kickback. These defensive behaviors can yield a successful escape. 

Naturally, in light of the danger of rats, mice have evolved to avoid rats. If they smell rat urine or encounter another rat feature, they will vacate the area. 

The takeaway
Rats can and do kill mice. However, such behaviors are driven by the type of rat in an area. Norway rats are formidable hunters, whereas roof rats stick to foraging. The drive to hunt mice is controlled by a complex interaction of learned behavior, neurological processes, and hunger. Interestingly, the brain area – the amygdala – that controls decision-making can be affected by drugs, altering muricidal behavior. These traits have led to rats being used in many lab experiments.

So, if you see a dead mouse, don't assume a cat. It could also be a rat.
